Testing & Certification
Testing and Certification of the Dynamic Burner Management Unit
Introduction
Virtually all energy saving products use monitoring “through the gas/electricity meter" as a means of proving their improved efficiency. This method is difficult, expensive and prone to error for the following reasons;
Firstly, you need a dedicated metered gas/electric supply to each appliance whose performance is being enhanced,
Secondly, you need to adjust the results for degree-day variations throughout the period at that specific location,
Thirdly, you need to ensure that there is no change in the use of the plant or the building, i.e. sequencing of boilers, optimisation systems, change in use of the building, system extensions, etc.
Fourthly, you need to test across all seasons on every installation as an enhanced performance in one season does not automatically mean it works under all load conditions.
Finally, you need to discount the effects of improved housekeeping that results from close monitoring. Following an extensive piece of research the Carbon Trust believes that as much as 5-10% will be saved by monitoring and taking associated good house-keeping actions.
Dynamic Energy consider this approach to be impractical, expensive and flawed, particularly where a relatively low-priced unit is designed to control a single boiler and it is applied to a multiple site operation.
The following approach has been devised to ensure that the customer could be satisfied of the savings being made on 100% of sites where the Dynamic Energy Burner Management Unit has been fitted.
Proving the Performance of the Dynamic Energy Burner Management Unit
When you purchase a Dynamic Burner Management Unit from Dynamic Energy you can be assured of its performance through two unique features:
Firstly, it is the only energy saving product with independent performance certification from the Building Research Establishment (BRE Certificate no CFP 348). This certificate examined performance over a range of temperatures, identifying that at average winter temperature of 10°C the saving is in the order of 16%.
Secondly, the Dynamic Burner Management Unit (DBMU) can be instructed to provide a Savings Report upon completion of the installation process or at any time later. Downloaded through a palm-held computer the report calculates the reduction in burner firing time when the DBMU is operating and calculates the exact percentage of fuel being saved. This process was all part of the Certification test carried out by BRE.
Your Audit Trail
The Savings Report which we download after each installation confirms that the Unit is working correctly and records the savings being achieved using information gathered and averaged over the previous 50 burner cycles. The Unit downloads three such tests which are held in its memory.
Whether you require evidence for an individual boiler or for multiple sites/ boiler installations, the report provides evidence that can be retained and ensures there are auditable results for your investment.
Your Performance Guarantee
Within the introduction a number of variables were identified that make it difficult to provide an unqualified guarantee that savings through-the-meter can be identified under all circumstances.
What Dynamic Energy is able to guarantee is that firstly, the Dynamic Burner Management Unit will save energy. The savings will be of the order of 10% when the external temperature is at 0°C and of the order of 16% when at 10°C, as per Building Research Establishment Certificate No.CFP 348.
Dynamic Energy also guarantees that the DBMU is working correctly with the Savings Report which is downloaded within 28 days following installation, a copy of which is provided as part of your guarantee.
It is estimated that an average winter day in the UK, when the greatest proportion of fuel is consumed, is around 8°C and accordingly a DBMU would be saving around 15%. Your test results will show that you will be saving energy at this level.
Historical and projected savings can be determined using the Fuel Savings Calculator which will also provide levels of CO2 saved; this service is available on request.
